What is Drano?
Drano is basically a drainage cleaner which is being manufactured by the S.C. Johnson and Son Company. Drano's basic consists of these components; aluminum, mainly sodium hydroxide and of course water Household Products Database (2013). Since Drano is a mixture of a few chemicals, it does not have any chemical/scientific name at all but since it contains a lot of sodium hydroxide, many call the cleaner "lye"or "caustic soda", which is usually known only for sodium hydroxide Clogtalk (2011) so it is applicable. The chemical formula for Drano, well the basic formula, is "2NaOH+2Al+2H2O" !
Physical Properties of Drano Kitchen Crystal Clog Remover*:
- crystals are small in size and light blue in color - crystals are soluble in water |
Chemical Properties of Drano:
- The NaOH (sodium hydroxide) and the aluminum react with each other as the crystallized cleaner dissolves causing heat - These crystals are very destructive and non flammable - The heat is caused when hydrogen from NaOH comes in contact with other chemicals |
The Number of Atoms in each element present:
- 3 pairs of Hydrogen Atoms; in total of six
- 4 Oxygen Atoms
- 2 Aluminum Atoms
- 2 Sodium Atoms
